• 5.0 out of 5 stars from JamesMS -- A compelling read. : This book documents the rise and actions of five revolutionaries who seriously undermined the liberty and growth of their nations' peoples by attempting to maintain political power. This book is a compelling read because of the author's larger argument: that revolutionaries often promise individual liberties but, once acquiring power, act out of self-interest and infringe upon liberties to maintain power. From the case studies, maintaining power comes often at a cost to other things as well, including economic growth and traditional culture. I found the chapter on Mao particularly compelling given the scale of destruction (famine, destruction of historical artifacts and traditions) documented. The book implies that revolutionary monsters destroy or distort aspects of civilizations, or that no traditions or ideas are safe from the all-consuming zeal of truly self-absorbed revolutionaries. The author seeks to inform young people in particular about the potential for such seemingly unpredictable civilizational decay, and the roles of revolutionary monsters. This is a compelling read. It is definitely something the youth of today should read. Just to understand that the socialism they seem to think will solve all problems could become a nightmare in the end. I plan to encourage all eight of my grandkids to read this. Hopefully it will get them thinking and questioning the push for socialism from the Left. Very timely given the mandates around Covid and our creep towards authoritarianism. He details their upbringing, their thoughts, evolution to revolutionary ideals, and their atrocities in a way that isn’t theoretical or academic. It’s a good read for any student of history whether a novice or a professor. . This book is needed now more than ever as a reminder that monsters exist, and they always come wrapped in the cloaks of equality, social justice, and prosperity - but always end up with terror and atrocities. While I have only read the first two chapters of the book, it's a compelling and thoughtful read. Critchlow is making a particular argument to warn young people of the logical costs and conclusions of revolution, he sticks to historical facts and quotations when making his arguments. Furthermore, Critchlow considers the arguments and journalistic records, giving as charitable a view as is possible for these dictators.
