  • from C -- TOP 50 REVIEWER : An unusual book, pieces of history told through an interesting perspective ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Elliott Berkihiser -- Not compelling : While the author sometimes writes in the first person and seems like a knowledgeable and pleasant personality, the narrative itself was not a compelling read for me. Two things stand out in my view. First, although the author states that the book is not about the mechanisms of clocks, a little more information about how the designs developed and about the source of the new tools that made better clocks would have added a lot to my interest. The second thing is that the author makes many philosophical statements about clocks being used to control populations and about some of the rebellions centering on time-keeping, etc., he does not do a good job of supporting those statements with historical evidence or arguments. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from JM Barrie -- Really interesting, but... : The author's premise about time is interesting. We can understand 12 different aspects of civilization by considering time keeping through the ages. I find the book a good read, but wondered in the end if the "12 clocks" was a bit of a stretch. A few of the 12 themes were somewhat indistinct, making me wonder if the number was selected because of the hours on the clock face. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from A M -- Various cases relating to the history of timekeeping without a main theses : The book reviews various cases relating to the history of timekeeping. The subjects include ancient clocks, the clock used in the high-frequency stock trade, and a clock that will run for the next 5,000 years. Unfortunately, the book does not review the technical details of these clocks and presents no main theses. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Julia L. Scott -- a good read : A lot of information but never boring. I learned a lot of history and some technology. A good long view of where we have been and where we are now. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Very good : It is interesting. Until he gets to modern day. That is when I quit reading. But first third of book is good ( Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Elizabeth A. Vaughn -- Thoroughly unique overview of the history of time. : Excellent summary of the history of clocks with a sober challenge for their use in the future. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Domo J. Kingscliff -- We’ll written, intrigued. : Amazing Read! ( Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2021 )
